Junk Kouture- ‘Regional Final’

Congratulations to Transition Year students Emma Connolly and Orla White  who got through to the regional final of the Junk Kouture competition with their entry ‘On Pointe’. Their design is based on the revival of old Irish craftsmanship. Many projects rely heavily on glue and they wanted to try create an outfit using traditional techniques. Throughout the process they have broadened their craft level and learned many new skills such as weaving, knotting, braiding and threading. In times gone by the lake was vital for people and how they lived, they wanted to incorporate some of the materials and techniques they used as they were vital to keep them alive. Their design was created using bulrushes, sourced from our local lake, Lough Derg. They dried & wove the bulrushes into a corset using various different methods of weaving. They knotted feathers, sourced from an old pillow using threads to create our skirt. For the headpiece they threaded together old custom jewellery and scraps from the metal work room. To finish off they sprayed the headpiece and old ballet shoes gold to match the design.

They hope to inspire more young people to learn Irish crafts by looking into the past and embracing them.. ‘……follow their Instagram account onpointe.jk for updates!

Active School Flag Steps Challenge

The Active School’s class organised a step challenge for the whole school this week. There had a separate Junior & Senior competition where each class competed as a team and then their mean score was calculated. The staff competition was also divided into teams. The lucky winners will get an ice cream from a visiting ice cream van during Wellfest week.

At the beginning of the year, the ASF survey results showed that 30% of students tracked their steps, this week we have a 70% student uptake in the steps challenge which shows the huge increase. Well done to all the ASF class in achieving this.

Literacy Week

We celebrated Literacy Week this week with a series of events and challenges. On Monday, a Wordle Challenge was sent to all staff and students.  All staff and students took part  in DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) for the first ten minutes of class on Tuesday morning. We welcomed renowned Irish author Darren O’Shaughnessy (Darren Shan) for an interactive event with all first-year students on Wednesday. On Thursday, students were challenged with matching members of staff to their favourite novel based on the book covers and blurbs.

To finish off the week on Friday all staff and students were challenged with a brain-teasing riddle.

We will also be hosting a book swap for staff and students to exchange a pre-loved book for another at a later date.  It was a great week and enjoyed by all.

Junior Camogie Munster Junior Shield Final

Hard luck to our junior camogie team who lost by one point to Scoil Mhuire Carrick on Suir in the plate final on a score of 4-7 to 4-6.  It was a great battle and the girls can be very proud of their performance.

First Year Girls Soccer

We welcomed St. Mary’s Nenagh for a soccer match for first year girls on Tuesday last. Two goals from Grace Ehinger ensured we were leading at half-time. The girls gave their all in the second half playing into a gale force wind but struggled against the elements and St. Mary’s left victorious.  Well done to St. Mary’s and thanks for a great game.

U15 Boys Soccer

U15 boys played the formidable St Francis College Rochestown in the cup quarter final today. The Cork boys were great value for their victory. The Borris boys can be proud of their efforts and look forward to the Munster Trophy final. Best of luck to Rochestown in the semi-final.

Second Year Boys Basketball

Hard luck to our second year boys who played their best basketball yet but lost to a very strong Portlaoise team. Best of luck to Portlaoise College in the Semi-Finals.

Life From My Perspective -Photography exhibition

There was great excitement this week in the ASD Centre at Borrisokane Community College where a Photography exhibition was organised to mark the end of the eTwinning Project “Life From My Perspective”. This project took place over the last 4 months and involved schools and students with additional needs from Turkey, Italy, Portugal, Ukraine, Romania, Latvia, Greece and Ireland. In this project students got to know and understand the world around them and show their perspective on life by taking photographs under the following headings; “Living Things”, Fruit and Vegetables, Climate and Seasons and Natural Beauties in the place where I live”.  Similarly to other schools involved our students also examined Irish history by studying a hero from the past – Padraig Pearse, and celebrated domestic food products week, by examining food products made in Ireland and cooking with them. Students also developed their ICT skills by using new apps to design their own Avatars and make word clouds. They celebrated International Disabilities week by contributing to a video made also used ICT to play an Online Kahoot and Jigsaw designed for the project. To mark this years eTwinning theme “The Future, Beautiful, Sustainable Together” students designed posters of how they would like the world to be.  They also learned how to use a virtual reality app. Together with our partner schools we created several common products by working together, a common poster, song and e book containing contributions from all schools were the results. Students and Teachers involved also held online meetings with each other to help progress the project. Parents were also invited to contribute through surveys and Twin space and they along with family members were invited to view the work created by students and their photographs during the exhibition. To recognise the great work done students and Ms Morgan were presented with project certificates by Mr Carr Principal.
