Borrisokane Community College School Notes
Crocus Project
We are delighted to be involved in The Crocus Project for 2022/23. This project aims to educate and inform about the Holocaust and its consequences. Our TYs this week planted crocus bulbs in memory of all the children who perished in the Holocaust. The yellow crocuses recall the star of David that Jewish people were forced to wear. The Crocus bloom around international Holocaust Remembrance Day in Jan.
Senior Hurling
Well done to our Senior Hurling team on Wed last who had a great win over Coláiste Chríost Rí in the first round of the Munster Championship in Croom. A great effort was put in by all and a good start to the year. Scoreline 2-19 to 2-13.
Senior Camogie
Hard luck to our Senior Camogie Team who lost by four points to Roscrea on Tuesday last. It was a very even game that was level at half time and could have gone either way near the end. Training continues for the girls and hopefully we will have a better result on our next outing.
Junior A Camogie
Our Junior A camogie team travelled to Nenagh on Thursday 13th October to play St Marys in the first round of championship. The girls put in a huge effort but unfortunately St Marys came out on top with a score line of 5-19 to 1-11. Well done to St Marys. Borrisokane CC should be very proud of the effort they put in. The girls gave a mighty performance throughout and played excellent as a team. Well done to everyone involved.
County Schools Handball
Well done to Lucy Gould, Clodagh Shinners and Sophie O’Meara who played in the County Final schools handball competition this week. Clodagh and Sophie won the junior double county final on a score line of 28-23. The girls now go on to play the Munster final next Friday in Dungarvan. Best of luck girls.

TY Poetry Workshop
We were delighted to welcome back Inspireland in person this week. This creative workshop allowed our TYs to express themselves through poetry. We look forward to reading these poems over the next few weeks.
YSI Talk
This week our Transition Year YSI class welcomed Susan O’Neill from the Young Social Innovator programme. This kick-starter workshop encouraged students to explore and discuss social issues on both a national and local level before agreeing as a class areas of focus. Students will work on this project for the year ahead.
Fast Fashion Webinar
This Climate Action Week our TY Sustainability class pledged to embrace slow fashion. With our pledge in mind, we took part in a webinar with Carrie Ann Moran from Circular Fashion Ireland. Tipperary County Council kindly funded the online workshop, called ’What is the true cost of our clothing?’
We learned about the complexities of the global fashion industry and the effect on both people and planet. Students were shocked to hear it takes 2,700 litres of water to produce one cotton t-shirt and that one rubbish truck full of clothes goes to landfill every minute!
Carrie Ann gave us great tips on how to shop more sustainably using Nuw app, reusing, repairing and upcycling clothes. We also looked at the new practice of greenwashing and how to see beyond this with the app GoodOnYou.
We held our first swop shop last year in Borrisokane Community College and look forward to building on that success with a second one in 2023.
Boys Basketball
Both the U19 and U16 Boys basketball teams played Kilcormac on Friday. The U19 team had a great win on a scoreline of 32 point to 14. The U16 team put in a strong performance but lost out by a tight margin in the end. Best of luck in the upcoming matches this week.
