The Leaving Certificate Applied Programme (LCA) is a distinct self-contained two year Leaving Certificate programme aimed at preparing students for adult and working life. It was introduced to recognise the talents of all students and provide opportunities for development in terms of responsibility, self-esteem and self-knowledge.
The two year programme consists of four half year blocks called Sessions and achievements are credited in each of these sessions.

Students are assessed in February and May of each year. Terminal examinations take place in some subjects in June of the final year.
On completion of the Leaving Certificate Applied, students can progress to work or further education in the Post Leaving Certificate area and eventually to third level.
